Lesson 9: Bubble Trouble
A quick, hands-on lesson on echo-chambers and algorithms.
Much of what students encounter on their social media feeds is carefully curated by AI algorithms. Advertisements, news, and recommended activities do not appear on users’ feeds coincidentally, but rather are based on their preferences and previous searches. Though these AI algorithms may present harmless and mundane content, there is also the risk that they subtly shape users’ opinions without their awareness. This may increase social polarization because AI algorithms show content that aligns with users’ preexisting beliefs, often filtering out opposing views.
This week’s lesson is designed to help students understand the mechanisms behind AI algorithms and the risks they pose. Through hands-on activities, students will gain skills to think critically about AI’s influence and learn strategies to reduce its effects.

How to Use This Lesson
This week’s lesson includes a full lesson plan, with a fun activity and accompanying worksheets designed for active participation.
This lesson walks through the following four core ideas:
How AI algorithms shape what users see on their social media.
How AI-driven echo chambers form.
How these echo chambers contribute to social polarization.
Strategies to reduce the negative effects of AI algorithms.
